Psalm 147:3
The world has never seemed to run short on evil. From biblical villains to Hitler to 9/11, and now the biggest mass shooting in U.S. History, which happened just a few short days ago, it is enough to make one lose faith in humanity. The events in Orlando are nothing short of a tragedy, and these sorts of events seem to happening all too often these days.
The country has rallied behind these poor people, which is both encouraging and disheartening. It is encouraging that people from all walks of life and different beliefs have come together to pour love and support on those in the wake of the Orlando shooting. It is disheartening because sometimes it takes something as major as a tragic loss to bring people together, and this should not be so. There should be compassion and love shown in times of darkness and in times of light.
There was no light in the man that committed this crime.
I know many Christians and non-Christians alike wonder how something like this could happen. This morning as I heard updates on the radio, a story my mother told me came into my mind. Years ago, she wanted to start an acting troupe at the school where she teaches. She prayed and had everything planned out, but still kept getting shot down. She was so confident that she was following God's plan, but she couldn't understand why it wasn't succeeding. A friend of hers told her that just because she was doing the right thing and following God's plan didn't mean that everyone around her or that she encountered was. A much bigger scale of this happened in Orlando. Tragedies occur when people become overcome with evil; when someone's compass of what is right and wrong disappears and there is only insanity left.
I believe that the people of Orlando as well as those affected by other recent and past catastrophes will rise from the ashes to stand tall again, and love must be the glue they use to rebuild. Let us be blind to differences and open our eyes to each other. Too many times, whether on large scales or small, people let petty things grow and grow until they can't see the forest for the trees. Too many innocent lives have been lost throughout the course of history for us to keep ignoring the lessons we should be learning. The world will never be short on darkness, but hopefully it will never be short on light either.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3
